Safe in My Garden: Reduction of Mainstream Flow and Turbulence by Macroalgal Assemblages and Implications for Refugia of Calcifying Organisms From Ocean Acidification

Macroalgae, with their various morphologies, are ubiquitous throughout the world’s oceans and provide ecosystem services to a multitude of organisms. Water motion is fundamental physical parameter controlling mass transfer dissolved carbon nutrients from macroalgal surface, but measurements flow speed turbulence within above canopies lacking. This information becoming increasingly important as may act refugia for calcifying organisms ocean acidification (OA); extent which they driven by water motion. Here we report on field campaign assess natural at two depths (3 6 m) sites (Ninepin Point Tinderbox) in Tasmania, Australia relation canopy height % cover functional forms.
